History of Dholera
From Ancient Roots to A Smart City Future

Ancient Significance

Dholera’s history dates back to the Indus Valley Civilization, making it one of the oldest known settlements in India. Archaeological findings suggest that the region was once a thriving trade and cultural center, strategically located near the Gulf of Khambhat, facilitating maritime trade.

Medieval & Colonial Era

During the medieval period, Dholera was an important port town under various regional rulers. It played a significant role in Gujarat’s trade and commerce, connecting India with international markets. The influence of the Maurya, Chalukya, and Mughal dynasties shaped its historical and cultural landscape. During British rule, Dholera continued to serve as a trade hub, but its prominence declined with the rise of modern ports.

Transformation into a Smart City

In the 21st century, Dholera has been reimagined as India’s first and largest planned smart city under the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) initiative. The Government of India and the Gujarat Government have designated it as a Special Investment Region (SIR), aiming to develop it into a global manufacturing and industrial hub.
