Hitachi and other Japanese companies are significantly involved in the Dholera Smart City project, primarily as partners in the development of the region's robust semiconductor ecosystem and core infrastructure.
Key details include:
Hitachi Hi-Rel Presence: Hitachi Hi-Rel is one of the companies that has already been allotted plots in the Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR) activation area, indicating an established physical presence and involvement in the initial phase of development.
Semiconductor Partnerships: Hitachi, along with Taiwanese firm Solidlite, is a partner in the NextGen venture, which has signed a Memorandum of of Understanding (MoU) with the Gujarat government to establish a compound semiconductor and optoelectronics fabrication unit in Dholera.
Broader Japanese Investment: A high-level Japanese business delegation, led by the Japanese Ambassador to India, visited Dholera in July 2025 to explore investment opportunities further, particularly in semiconductors, AI, clean energy, and transport infrastructure.
Major Japanese Companies Involved: Other major Japanese companies like Tokyo Electron (a partner in the Tata Electronics semiconductor plant), Fujifilm Electronic Materials, and Shimizu Corporation are also establishing or exploring their presence in Dholera to support the growing semiconductor supply chain.
Infrastructure Support: The Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) has set up a project development fund for the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) projects, which includes Dholera, to facilitate Japanese investment in world-class infrastructure.
Overall, the news highlights a strong and growing partnership between India and Japan in the Dholera project, with a current emphasis on making Dholera a global hub for advanced manufacturing and technology
